Martha High & Speedometer - "I'd Rather Go Blind" b/w "No More Heartaches" on Freestyle Records

Filed Under: Drum Breaks , Freestyle Records , Martha High , Speedometer
This 45 on Freestyle Records features a slow-grooving ballad and great high-paced Marva Whitney-inspired Funk number, both of which reveal the deepest emotions of love from a woman's perspective. Vocalist Martha High joins UK band Speedometer for "I'd Rather Go Blind" b/w "No More Heartaches" for an impressive performance of authentic Deep Soul in 2012.
Powerful sounds from Houston Texas MC Lecrae who brings BIG K.R.I.T. and Ashton Jones along to project messages of faith, hope and belief over the drums of DJ Khalil.
Lecrae's album "Gravity" is available for pre-order here at iTunes and scheduled for a Sept 04, 2012 release.
Nice reflective Hip Hop with a 90's vibe of production from the union of mic veteran Rob-O and UK producer/DJ Pings. Grab your copy here at KingUnderground's website.
Here's what the label has to say about this project:
"The title track is soulful, jazzy and uplifting and features Rob-O formerly of INI on the vocals. Rob-O’s classic flows roll over Pings's chopped up piano sample and boom bap drums nicely. The ‘You & Me’ vocal hook is dripping with soul and complements the content of Rob-O’s reminiscent raps. He describes the vibes and the highs and lows captured in the group INI and tells a story of the groups progression.
The B-side features an instrumental song called ‘Fly Away’. The track is centred around string samples and a bouncing bass-line with guitar & piano samples throughout. To complete the track there's a ‘Fly Away’ vocal sample that compliments the song really well. Also on the B-side is the instrumental version of ‘You & Me."
Label: KingUnderground Records
Catalogue: KU-002
Format: 7'' (vinyl, limited edition of 300 copies)
All tracks produced by Pings.

Large is still one of the livest MCs to perform in my book, he gives his stage performances an even stronger dose of aggression than you hear on the album version. Enjoy a set of his classics performed live @ The Terrace in Pasadena, CA 8/15/12.
Boonie Mayfield aka Boon Doc and his friend T-Mos combine to produce a smooth-flowing sound of boom-bap for their upcoming collaborative instrumental project set for release in 2012, with Boonie's next album to follow in 2013. These guys know how to set the mood with their music, using the foundations of Hip Hop, Jazz and a hands-on approach to craft beats which are musically ambitious by creating their own sounds and grooves from scratch, as you'll see demonstrated in the video.
Brian James direction on "Freedom Summer" is aimed towards the outlook of a person who is determined to push forward in life and fight against struggle while inspiring others to do so. The beauty of Brian's music lies in his diversity to teach and entertain simultaneously, pairing his messages of social awareness with an approach to Hip Hop which is not just beats and rhymes but can be appreciated as entertaining and competitive songwriting. The West Coast MC balances food for thought upon a foundation of driving beats and melodic grooves which are produced by Chris Reed. With emotion which vary from songs to song, "Freedom Summer" provides a variety of feelings to match the messages, from dark aggression to inspirational and reflective moods.
Full steam ahead while refusing to be mislead, Brian James is hear to inspire you to keep on with "Freedom Summer".
"Some of our greatest soul/funk artists are no longer here. The mission of the G-Spot interview collection is to preserve the history of our great artist through interviews. It would be a shame to not know the history of groups, artists and songs of the 70's and 80's. Learn the true meaning of songs from the artists themselves, what motivated them to become a recording artist. This is a true testimonial of the art, a history lesson into the Funk and soul of a person."
G-Spot is proud to share the voices of late talents of music (besides DeBarge, Lonnie Jordan & Morris Day) who continue to captivate minds and make people move through their timeless songwriting. From the energetic Funk of Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band, the legendary vocoder sound of Roger Troutman, to the smooth vocal presence and dance grooves of Teena Marie, this audio archive features the thoughts of great musical minds prior to their passing.

Soulinterviews.com scores a fascinating interview with American composer, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Patrice Rushen. Best known for her 1982 hit, "Forget Me Nots", Patrice has accomplished mainstream success while touching upon various styles and expression as a musician who is based on classical piano and a background in Jazz. Her appreciation for the history of music and open mind towards expanding upon her musical vocabulary is great, having created her own sound in everything from Jazz fusion to a transition into classic Soul and Boogie during the 70's and 80's. In this interview Patrice reflects upon her life in music and explains the approach in which she expresses sound and ideas to produce beautiful, timeless music.
DJ Haylow ventures into the beautiful sound of Brazilian music and examines it's distinct influence upon a few other genres on "Brasiliana", a mix which he says is "more than just a compilation of songs, It is a mindset". Here are words from Haylow as he speaks about the significance and vibe of this mix:
"Brasiliana takes place in the late 60′s, early 70′s, and it is truly a beautiful place. The vibe is one of pipes and smoking jackets while entertaining a social event in your mod style case study house overlooking the city, or it could be a relaxing day on a deserted white sand beach. Either way, Brasiliana is musical enjoyment at the fullest, designed to paint a picture of another world and era. An assortment of lounge music, you will hear bossa nova, samba, and jazz by Brazilian, Italian, and American artists, singers, composers, musicians, and arrangers. There is no limit to instrumentation, as each song holds unique qualities that make them different from the next, though the mix in it’s entirety has a marvelously cohesive sound that makes it an easy listen from start to finish.
This is a glimpse into a time that sparks intrigue, style, fascination, and wonderment.
Welcome to Brasiliana."

The Motet and The Big Gigantic touch upon the funky, fast-paced Jazz fusion side of Herbie Hancock's music in this special dedication concert at The Other Side on July 26, 2012. Prepare to move as this young group of musicians jam with energy and passion by playing a variety of classics from Herbie's catalog.
Review of the concert by Music Mauraders.com:
Of all of The Motet's side projects and cover shows, my favorite and the most funky is by far Joey Porter's Herbie Hancock Tribute. The project features Dan Schwindt (Kyle Hollingsworth Band) on guitar, Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic) on sax, Dave Watts (The Motet, Juno What) on drums, Matt Grundstad on percussion, Garrett Sayers (The Motet, GST) & Joey (Juno What, The Motet) on keys. In the main room of Cervantes Chris Robinson Brotherhood packed the space, diverting any and all overflow traffic into Cervantes Otherside for what would be a rowdy night of funk!
The Motet Live at The Other Side on July 26, 2012.
"The mood was light at the relatively young group of musicians took the stage. What followed was about two hours of sweaty funk performed to a extra excited crowd. With funky chopping and wailing from Dan's borrowed custom guitar, he let the crowd know that he meant business. From the other side of the stage Garrett stepped up to lay down an impeccable groove. It's rare that two musicians of such quality on the strings play Cervantes Other Side. They positioned Dom at the front of the stage on sax for what can only be described as clean raging party sax.
Dave's phat drumming lead the band through some truly danceable moments, outputting so much sound that filled the Other Side. To Dave's left, Matt held down the percussion section with some interesting rhythms and tasty fills. Joey chopped away with clav rips and electric precision. From rare tunes like "Tell Everybody" & "4am" to classics like "Chameleon," this special project brought it hard. It was undeniably a sell out with both sides of Cervantes boasting packed rooms. Eventually the time came when it was too pack and too sweaty. With that we departed knowing that we would catch the remainder of the show on the flip side courtesy of Ed Simon. I look forward to the next time members of The Motet & Big Gigantic perform their tribute to a true funk/jazz legend!"

Nicolay provides an energetic and uplifting sound for the beautiful vocals and songwriting on his remix of "Say It" by Debórah Bond. Here is more about this lovely tune from +FE:
"The name Debórah Bond should definitely ring a bell with fans of The Foreign Exchange. The DC-based singer has been a supporting vocalist on several show dates of their recent Authenticity Tour, and is a frequent +FE Music collaborator. Debórah released her third album, "Madam Palindrome", in 2011, and when she asked Nicolay to remix one of the album's cuts, he was more than happy to oblige. Back before Salaam Remi gained the larger mainstream recognition he deserved in working with Nas, he was an emerging producer who had just begun to make noise in the early to mid 90's by lending his sonic touch to Supercat's Hip Hop/Reggae classic "Ghetto Red Hot", The Fugees' "Nappy Heads", an underground banger of The Bush Babees "Remember We" and other notable collaborations. Salaam walked the line between mainstream and underground in providing heat on the boards to introduce the world to new talent, all while keeping the essence of an inventive sample-based production approach.
In this 1995 article scan of Rap Pages magazine, Salaam discusses his unique approach to producing sounds of Hip Hop and other styles of music coming from Marley Marl's boom-bap sampling influence mixed with an upbringing based upon his father's musical background. He is one of the more interesting producers you could find in the early/mid 90's who pushed the envelope of fusing Hip Hop with a few other forms of closely related music styles to carve a distinct niche of sound.

This biography on the story of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi should be a fascinating read for fans everywhere as insight into one of the greatest fusion bands after Miles Davis. Released on July 24, 2012, author Bob Gluck goes for a rare look behind the music of this innovative collective with interviews, study of studio recording techniques and analysis of their catalog. Mwandishi is a Swahili name Hancock gave himself during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The members of the Sextet Mchezaji (Buster Williams) Jabali (Billy Hart), Mganga (Eddie Henderson), Mwile (Bennie Maupin), Pepo Mtoto (Julian Priester), and Ndugu (Leon Chancler) all adopted Swahili names as well during induction into the band.
About this Book:
"As the 1960s ended, Herbie Hancock embarked on a grand creative experiment. Having just been dismissed from the celebrated Miles Davis Quintet, he set out on the road, playing with his first touring group as a leader until he eventually formed what would become a revolutionary band. Taking the Swahili name Mwandishi, the group would go on to play some of the most innovative music of the 1970s, fusing an assortment of musical genres, American and African cultures, and acoustic and electronic sounds into groundbreaking experiments that helped shape the American popular music that followed. In You’ll Know When You Get There, Bob Gluck offers the first comprehensive study of this seminal group, mapping the musical, technological, political, and cultural changes that they not only lived in but also effected.
Beginning with Hancock’s formative years as a sideman in bebop and hard bop ensembles, his work with Miles Davis, and the early recordings under his own name, Gluck uncovers the many ingredients that would come to form the Mwandishi sound. He offers an extensive series of interviews with Hancock and other band members, the producer and engineer who worked with them, and a catalog of well-known musicians who were profoundly influenced by the group. Paying close attention to the Mwandishi band’s repertoire, he analyzes a wide array of recordings—many little known—and examines the group’s instrumentation, their pioneering use of electronics, and their transformation of the studio into a compositional tool.
From protofunk rhythms to synthesizers to the reclamation of African identities, Gluck tells the story of a highly peculiar and thrillingly unpredictable band that became a hallmark of American genius."
The Trinity of Sadat X, A.G. and DJ Jab revive a funky head-nodder by the late, great J-Dilla to convey inspirational messages and a mature outlook upon life on "Sunshine". The vibe of this song is reminiscent of the feel you might of heard on Brand Nubian's debut LP where you hear the MC project their positive view of the world around them over a loop. It carries a similar vibe of positivity and social awareness as the original "Sunshine" by Brand Nubian with Janelle Collins on vocals to add the soulful touch of a female vocalist. Audio is provided courtesy of Okayplayer.com
The first official release from The Trinity Project, the single features production from James DeWitt Yancey aka J Dilla- the late legendary Detroit musician. The Jay Dee instrumental was purchased from the J Dilla Foundation and was being saved for a special project. According to DJ Jab, The Trinity Project was it.
Words from DJ Jab of The Trinity/Fat Beats Records:
"I'm excited about this track as it features a J Dilla beat and he is the biggest producer on the record. The clear 7" also includes a tribute track to Grandmaster Roc Raida who is another Hip-Hop legend that I had the honor of working with at Fat Beats. For authentic Hip-Hop heads there is nothing else like it... Dilla on one side of the vinyl and Raida on the other by incorporating "Beats for Jugglers" for the tribute.
